The Tennessee Court of Appeals has ruled that records related to the Covenant School shooting must be released to the public.

In a unanimous decision on February 4, the Court overturned a previous trial court ruling that blocked files pertaining to the investigation for almost two years.
Thus far, the Metro Nashville Police Department has denied every public records request since the March 2023 shooting, stating that their investigation was ongoing.
That investigation, however, was finalized in April 2025.
The Court stated that the closure of the investigation meant it was no longer necessary to keep those records sealed.

They also stated that the shooter’s writings should be released now and are not blocked due to federal copyright laws. Some of those writings were released last year after media entities, including the Tennessee Star, filed a lawsuit against the FBI for denying their release.
All of the records will not be released immediately, however. The trial court must now go through records to determine what portions, if any, should be excluded from release as a part of the school security exemption.
