Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said that Tennessean’s have decided that the Death Penalty is the appropriate punishment for certain crimes and that the process of execution needs a thorough review. He also indicated that executions will be halted until such review can be completed.

The Governor did not post information about the review of executions or make an executive order. He made his intentions known during various interviews that he gave to media outlets.

The death penalty issue arose after two execution attempts failed in a period of 5 months. The first failed execution was attempted on May 21, 2026. The second failed execution occurred on September 30th. Those execution attempts were made on Tony Carruthers and Christa Pike, respectively.

Even before the failed executions were attempted, Witness to Innocence held a Media Conference in Nashville on April 30, 2026. Included in that conference at the Cordell Hull Building in Nashville was an appearance of the 100th death row inmate that was exonerated in the United States in 2002. DNA evidence excluded Ray Krone from the crime scene. Krone and his sister, Helen Prejan, co-founded the organization  Witness to Innocence.

The Tennessee Conservative News interviewed Krone in April. Carruthers execution was attempted a few days later. Despite the outcome, Governor Bill Lee announced that he would not intervene in the scheduled Pike execution.

Carruthers Sister, Tonya Hervey, filed a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Health against the executioner alleging torture and malpractice. A copy from the 4-page complaint is pictured below.

Fast forward to the Christa Pike execution attempt.

The Pike execution failed and focused national attention on the State of Tennessee.

During the attempted execution of Pike, an emergency motion was filed in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A copy of that motion is pictured below.

Back on Tuesday, July 28, at 11:00 a.m. Tennessee Medical Professionals held a press conference in Nashville urging Governor Bill Lee to suspend executions until the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) can demonstrate meaningful improvements in planning, training, and operations around the entire execution process.

A letter published by the doctors who attended the press conference is linked here.

In a statement by Dr. John Greer, he emphasizes “This is not just sticking a needle in a person’s arm.” Greer, who has practiced medicine for over 40 years. “Placing a central line means accessing the subclavian vein, a central vein above the heart, and should only be done by someone trained and performing the procedure routinely. It is fraught with risks.”

Finally, after the resignation of Tennessee Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada, the following statements were issued by Porter.

“Since the botched execution in May of this year, people from diverse political backgrounds across Tennessee have called for a pause in executions to examine the problems with the execution process. These pleas were ignored. The state of Tennessee has shown the world it cannot be trusted to implement capital punishment in a way that preserves human dignity and the rule of law. This has to stop now.”

“Attorneys and community leaders across Tennessee have been trying for some time to get the Governor and the administration to take seriously the huge problems with the competency of the state’s execution process. They were ignored. Hopefully, this is the beginning of accountability and an end to secrecy that enables these debacles.” – said Laura Porter, Executive Director, U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty

  1. So, I didn’t see Laura Porter mention Colleen Slemmer’s name…where was her human dignity as she was being tortured and beaten? So much so that Pike had a piece of Colleen’s skull as a “souvenir. What about Colleen and her dignity, her pain and suffered, her right to live?
I agree this was beyond embarrassing for the state and beyond incompetent…not once but twice. So, was it intentional?
I’m more concerned about Colleen’s surging family who has to endure another round of torture.
As I was early voting today, the local Democrat club was outside with a sign that said to vote NO to Amendments 1 and 3. Do I need to say anymore?
