The Tennessee Conservative [By Adelia Kirchner] –
Tri-Cities Christian Academy in Blountville, Tennessee, recently hired Brian McKinney to be their new head of schools.
It wasn’t long before parents and students learned that at his last school, McKinney had hired a registered sex offender to do maintenance work on the football field. The man was on the registry for an offense involving a minor.
Changes in the academy’s leadership have brought up concerns amongst some parents.
Last month, the school announced McKinney would be taking over as the new head of schools.
However, it seems that once word began to circulate about McKinney’s past hiring decisions, the school tried to backtrack.
Just last week, the academy emailed parents to let them know that Dr. Kevin Cline will now be acting as the interim head of schools and that McKinney will simply be “supporting Dr. Cline.”
One mother whose daughter has attended the school for the last three years, April Ferguson, says that they plan to homeschool this year because of the school’s decision to hire McKinney.
“We did not get the notification of Mr. McKinney’s hiring until late, and then no information of his past was given to us until some high school students started Googling,” Ferguson told Channel 11 News. “And then the word spread.”
McKinney resigned from his previous position as headmaster at Park Avenue Christian Academy in Titusville, Florida, following his decision to hire the registered sex offender according to reports from Orlando’s WFTV published in May of this year.
The resignation came after the Park Avenue Christian Academy school board and Park Avenue Baptist Church elders learned of McKinney’s decision to hire 41-year-old Colby Richard Ammons.
Ammons was charged with solicitation of a minor using a computer back in 2007 according to Florida’s sex offender registry.
Another disturbing fact discovered since the uncovering of this issue, is that Ammons actually relocated to Greene County, Tennessee, earlier this year.
The registry states that Ammons new address in Chuckey, Tennessee, was reported on June 25th, 2025.
The reason for his relocation is unknown. However, it may be found noteworthy that Chuckey is a within a reasonable commute from the location of Tri-Cities Academy.
“After learning that the sex offender that he hired in Florida has also moved to this area, that did not sit well with me,” Ferguson stated. “Coincidence or not, it’s a little too much for me.”
According to Ferguson, she and other parents that have reached out to Tri-Cities Christian Academy via emails and letters requesting an explanation have still heard nothing from the school regarding their concerns.
“We have loved the school until this situation,” added Ferguson. “We do hope to be able to go back to Tri-Cities and we’re hoping that maybe this brought some light to the board to make better decisions.”
