A former school janitor at a Hamilton County School who was arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting children appeared in court on Monday.
28-year-old Zackary Nelson was banned from going within 1000 feet of any public or private school and was ordered to stay away from any public place where children gather. He was also barred from any unsupervised contact with any minors.
These conditions were added to Nelson after the prosecution agreed not to request an increase of Nelson’s bond or to have it revoked at this time.
Nelson was given a bond of $60,000 immediately following his arrest.
Hamilton County Judge Tori Smith noted that those stipulations could change after a preliminary hearing.
Judge Smith stated, “I just want to make it clear that does not take my authority that if after I hear this (in the preliminary hearing) that this bond is woefully low for the charge.”
Nelson was arrested last week at Daisy Elementary School after the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office received a referral from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in March. He was employed by ABM, a company that contracts custodial services for Hamilton County Schools.
The referral alleged that he was associated with an account containing an image of an adult female employed at the school, along with two male children. All appeared to be pantsless as a result of the photo being digitally altered.
A search of Nelson’s home turned up almost 4000 digitally altered photos and videos of children and adults. More than 100 of the images had been manipulated using AI to portray children engaging in explicit sexual acts in various stages of nudity.
He was charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor. He is scheduled to be back in court on October 5.
