Governor Bill Lee has expressed support for President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans, although he has yet to say whether he will send the Tennessee National Guard to assist with the efforts.

“I agree that he should, because he’s been elected, follow through with what he promised he would do for the American people,” Lee said. “To the degree that Tennessee participates in that, I look forward to seeing what his plans are going to be. We will be supportive of the strategies of the president.”

He added that Tennessee is ready to cooperate with the president but clarified that no specific request has been made to the state yet.

Lee did, however, tell reporters that he is continuing to work to advance his push for a statewide universal school voucher program, although support among lawmakers is still uncertain.

Some new lawmakers, including Representatives Aron Maberry (R-Clarksville-District 68) and Lee Reeves (R-Franklin-District 65), are backing the idea, while others, such as Senator Tom Hatcher, have not yet taken a stance.

“I think when people understand it, that they’ll advocate for it. We do know that the majority of Tennesseans … believe that school choice is appropriate, so we’ll continue to work for that,” Lee stated.

During the spring legislative session, Lee’s proposal advanced in both the House and Senate, but it failed to go through when leaders could not reach an agreement on the bill’s major components.

  1. Will Bill answer these questions? Why is this the ‘Universal School Choice’ program? Is it because it will cost state taxpayers a universal arm and a leg? Or is it because it will only allow 2% of Tennessee students to be ‘free’ of their poorly performing schools? Why is it that Bill seems set on ‘buying’ the teachers unions with a bigger pay check, yet not holding them to account for their poor performance? Why is it that Bill’s bill will give more tax dollars to Tennessee county’s to build more schools when they continue to fail student populations? Why are there financial limits on parents, whose school children can participate? Will Bill’s bill be an ‘opening’ for the bureaucrats at Tn Dept of Ed to ‘crack the code’ of separation of ‘state and private schools’ to control their agenda too? We all know that the likes of those running TDofEd, i.e. Penny Schwinn (a ‘left coast’ girl) live in the fantasy land of ‘state knows best, not parents’! Maybe I can help answer….maybe it is because Bill ‘needs’ this legislative victory more than he ‘needs’ all Tennessee students to have educational choices? No wonder voters have so little faith in government and politicians.
