VETERAN’S CEMETERY AT RISK.

A proposed development on the East side of State Route 66 at the French Broad River in Sevier County has county residents and descendants of various war veterans buried on the site concerned about the remains of their relatives being exhumed and moved to another burial place.
A developer has petitioned the Chancery Court in Sevier County for approval to move the graves of those veterans, and possibly others that may be buried there. The site of the development is a 270-acre tract of land owned by RPD Limited Partnership who is the Petitioner in the court pleading. A copy of their 5-page Petition to the Chancery Court of Sevier County is provided at the end of the article.
One of the groups weighing in on the issue is Veterans Heritage Site Foundation, which provided the map below on their social media page.
The group also has a petition circulating on their page asking that the cemetery be preserved and left in its present location. A link to the petition is provided here.
Veterans Heritage Site Foundation has sent the Chancery Court of Sevier County the letter pictured below.

“As President of Veterans Heritage Site Foundation, we feel that the Veterans buried at Ellis Cemetery have fought for our country especially, William Ellis, a War of 1812 veteran needed to be honored, and their graves maintained as they were initially laid to rest.
