A Hamilton County school librarian recently attempted to expose students attending Alpine Crest Elementary School to children’s literature with roots in queer and gender studies.

The librarian sent a note home with the K-2 students to let parents know the details of what was labeled a Mother’s Day lesson and give them the opportunity to opt-out for their child.

“As a librarian, it is my responsibility to introduce students to a variety of texts and genres,” the note read, “With Mother’s Day approaching, I’d like to highlight this special role, but I am sensitive to the fact that not all students live with a mother. As such, I’m planning a lesson that celebrates those who fill the motherly roles in our lives.”

The note went on to acknowledge that the lesson could bring up “big feelings” leading to sensitive conversations at home and stated that if parents would like to have their student opt out of the lesson, an alternative assignment and location would be arranged.

The two books selected by the librarian for this read aloud lesson were “Stella Brings the Family” by Miriam B Schiffer, about a girl with two fathers who is going to attend a Mother’s Day celebration, and “Mother Bruce” by Ryan T. Higgins, which seems to bring up questions regarding pronouns and confusion through the story of a male bear that a group of baby geese believe is their mother.

When single mom and local chapter of Moms for Liberty President, Tonya Dodd, learned about the situation it frustrated her and she reached out to the superintendent and others right away.

The Mother’s Day lesson was ultimately canceled once word spread throughout the community and enough people had contacted the superintendent, school board, librarian, and school administration.

Hamilton County Schools Spokesman, Steve Doremus, issued a statement on the controversy.

“In this instance, as an administration, we chose to put a hold on the planned lesson at Alpine Crest Elementary School as we continue to consider the best ways to serve our students and families. We will continue to review district policy and adjust district procedures. The issue in question here is not the content selected, but the range of content available in the lesson that would have been inclusive to all family models.”

After this, left-leaning organization, Moms for Social Justice, started a petition on change.org to get the Mother’s Day lesson rescheduled. The petition goes as far as to deem Moms for Liberty a “far right extremist HATE GROUP” and has gained over 700 signatures.

Co-Founder of Moms for Social Justice, Taylor Lyons relayed that members of her organization are disappointed by the school district’s cancellation of the Mother’s Day lesson and have been encouraging folks to show up at tonight’s school board meeting to support the lesson’s reinstatement.

Lyons also maintained that “The books she [the librarian] put forth are award-winning titles,” and that Moms for Social Justice “could find nothing objectionable about them.”

  1. The Leftist groups are very sneaky and clever. Don’t believe that Moms for Social Justice really got 700 signatures. The Leftist groups in Williamson County do things like >
    1. They claim to have lots of members, but when you look close it’s about 200.
    2. They start a lot of “groups” – 10 people will start 10 separate “groups” and the “members” will be the same people.
    3. They claimed to have lots of “likes” on their Facebook page but it turned out they were bought.
    4. They do petitions that have lots of “signatures” but I think most are fake.
    5. They are the same unethical people who vote in Republican Primaries.

  2. The term Social Justice is the Ideology of a very old and influential Social Democrat.
    His name is Josef Stalin.

  3. I think we should install port a toilet for those poor people that aren’t sure where they should relive themselves. I promise you nobody will be hanging out there all day. Solved that problem.
