The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department has signed on to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in their ICE 287(g) program.
There are three different models that an agency can select when working with the program: jail enforcement, warrant service officer, and task force.
According to Johnson County Sheriff Shawn Brown, the department is considering the task force model, although he is unsure as to how exactly they will be involved. Brown says he has not had ample time in his role as sheriff to determine what is going to be best.
“This is going to be one of those things the law requires us to do, so we’re going to want to get out in front of it before they come and say, ‘Hey, you now have to do this.’ Gives us a little bit of time to vet it and make sure we’re making the right decisions,” Brown told WJHL.
The department must make a decision on their agreement by January 1, 2027, according to a new Tennessee state law that requires all sheriff’s departments to participate in the 287(g) program. Agencies could lose state funding if they fail to comply.
Brown noted that Johnson County does not currently have a “large influx” of people coming into the area, but stated, “we want to be best prepared to have a partnership, a foundation set and ready to work when that time comes.”
