Legislation Requiring Tennessee Law Enforcement To Report Illegal Aliens To The Feds Progresses Forward

Companion bills aimed at requiring local police to alert the Federal Government to the presence of illegal aliens in the state of Tennessee are moving forward in the House and Senate.
House Bill 2124 (HB2124), as well as Senate Bill 2576 (SB2576), state in summary – “ As introduced, requires, rather than authorizes, law enforcement agencies to communicate with the appropriate federal official regarding the immigration status of any individual, including reporting knowledge that a particular alien is not lawfully present in the United States or otherwise cooperate with the appropriate federal official in the identification, apprehension, detention, or removal of aliens not lawfully present in the United States. – Amends TCA Title 7, Chapter 68.”
SB2576 was heard in the Senate State and Local Government Committee yesterday, March 12th, and passed with 6 “Ayes” and 2 “Noes.”
Voting aye were Republican Senators Briggs, Jackson, Pody, Stevens, Walley, and Yager.
Voting no were Democrat Senators Kyle and Yarbro.
Senate Bill 2576, sponsored by Senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis-District 3), will next be scheduled to be heard on the Senate floor. That date has not yet been set upon the publication of this article.
Meanwhile in the House, HB2124, sponsored by Representative Rusty Grills (R-Newbern-District 71), has been recommended for passage and has been placed on the House’s regular calendar to be presented on March 14, 2024.
The legislation has been met with scrutiny by democrats, mainly questioning whether it is appropriate to dictate the policies of local police departments in requiring them to report to the Federal Government. However, the legislation has garnered much conservative support, especially in light of the influx of illegal alien activity in Tennessee and across the country.
