Legislation that would allow patients to sue medical professionals up to thirty years after gender reassignment if they consented to the procedures “in whole or in part” due to coercion passed in the House last week in a 72 to 19 vote along party lines.
Sponsored by Representative Jason Zachary (R-Knoxville-District 14), House Bill 1872 as amended provides a civil cause of action similar to a Tennessee law passed three years ago for minors.
During discussion on the bill between Representative Aftyn Behn (R-Nashville-District 51) and the sponsor, Zachary reiterated that the Tennessee General Assembly had already outlawed gender mutilation on minors and that the bill wasn’t about attacking adults who were happy with the transgender surgeries they had received, but about creating the ability to take action for those who felt they had been coerced.
The companion bill passed in the Senate, also along party lines, last month.
