As the arrest numbers for the Memphis Safe Task Force continue to climb, the unique collaboration of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies is yielding impressive fruit as a high-risk fugitive, gang member, and others involved in violent crimes have been apprehended in the last few days.

According to recent reporting, the task force has made over 1,200 arrests as of Tuesday afternoon, with 67 missing children located and 51 sex offenders charged. The arrest statistics claim there has been a 40% drop in overall violent crime in the city as Memphians begin to see the effects of the joint operations.

Reportedly, homicides are down by 50% compared to last month, and car thefts and sexual assaults have dropped by more than 60%.

In addition to the arrests of violent criminals, sex offenders, and illegal immigrants, several notable offenders have recently been captured thanks to the task force:

High-Risk Fugitive Captured

Last Sunday, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Ernest Jenkins, 41, who was wanted on numerous felony offenses. Jenkins faces charges of Criminal Attempt Second Degree Murder, Petition to Revoke Suspended Sentence, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, 2 Counts of Possession of Controlled Substances with Intent to Manufacture, Deliver or Sell, Theft of Firearm, Theft of Property, and Burglary of a Vehicle.

“Our message is clear, those who commit acts of violence will be found, and justice will be served. This operation is a testament to the dedication of every agency involved and the strength of our shared commitment to protecting the community,” said task force officials of the arrest.

Vice Lords Gang Member

On Monday night, the task force announced the arrest of a man authorities state is an admitted Vice Lords gang member. Barrington J. Harwell, 28, was pulled over for a traffic infraction but was arrested after officers found two handguns in his car. He has previously pleaded guilty to theft and has previous arrests for drug possession, per court records.

“This arrest sends a clear message to individuals who engage in violent crime: they will be located and held accountable. It stands as proof of the dedication and teamwork driving every agency involved in this operation,” a task force press release read.

2024 New Year’s Eve Vehicle Attack

24-year-old Anquanette Burnside was wanted for attempted first-degree murder after she reportedly hit another woman with her car twice on New Year’s Eve 2024. According to the arrest affidavit, a witness said the assault stemmed from an argument between his child’s mother and Burnside, wherein Burnside allegedly took the other woman’s identification, social security card, and credit cards and set them on fire in the bathroom sink.

Burnside then left the residence, got in her car, intentionally jumped the curb, and ran over the victim, who had followed Burnside outside. The vehicle then turned around, jumped the curb again, and hit the victim a second time. Burnside was arrested Jan. 6, 2024, but was released from jail on March 14 before being indicted again on the case and having a warrant issued for her arrest.

Serial Robbery Perpetrators

Authorities arrested a trio they say are connected to a string of six robberies over four days. Two men, Jar-Terrious White and Earl Williams, were apprehended along with a 16-year-old boy for allegedly robbing a total of nine people in neighborhoods across Parkway Village and East Memphis.

More Attempted Murder

Tuesday, Memphis Police arrested two individuals, Stephen Brown and Nathan Garita, after warrants were issued for attempted murder. Reportedly the duo shot a woman in the leg after a fight.

Facing A Grand Jury

The case of Marlon Wiggins, who was found with two firearms in “plain view” during his arrest, is headed to a Grand Jury according to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office. Wiggins is charged with Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Violation of Order of Protection.

The reason for Wiggins’ initial arrest was unstated, but evidence was provided to the judge by the FBI, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Memphis PD, according to the DA’s office. A judge found “probable cause” on all charges, meaning the case will now proceed to the Grand Jury for potential indictment.
