A Memphis schoolteacher was arrested last Thursday on charges of child sex crimes after allegedly performing lewd acts in a video shown to police.

Memphis police were called to the charter school, Granville T. Woods Academy, to investigate reports of a video of a sexual nature that involved a teacher. While investigating, officers seized a number of cell phones and found a screen recording that showed an adult male performing sex acts on himself while taking part in a video call.

45-year-old Chester Porter, a math teacher at Granville T. Woods Academy, admitted to Memphis police that he was the man seen in the video.

Police interviewed a 15-year-old girl who said she and Porter had been having sexual conversations for the past several months. She stated that the conversations were initially in-person but then moved over on to the social media platform and that she had recorded the video.

The girl also stated that Porter had also made sexual comments and touched her inappropriately while at school.

According to MPD, Porter said the conversations took place during the 2023-2024 school year and also admitted to having sexual conversations with other students as well.

The school district would not provide a comment on an active investigation.

Porter was charged with sexual battery by an authority figure, soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor, and soliciting of a minor-statutory rape.
