Armed security guards are being placed at several Metro Nashville Park facilities in an effort to provide additional security for visitors.

According to Metro Parks officials, the addition of armed guards will give a greater level of protection to both employees and guests.

The guards, supplied by Archangel Security and Allied Universal, are trained to respond to active threats and will be collaborating with Metro Parks Police and the Metro Nashville Police Department.

In addition to responding to specific incidents, the guards will also monitor facility entrances and hopefully serve as a visible deterrent for crime. It is also expected that the program will allow facility staff to give greater focus to customer support.

The cost for the initiative, which will also supply officers for marinas, community centers, and permitting offices, will be covered by the existing Metro Parks budget and will not come at an added expense to taxpayers.

The announcement comes as the Federal Bureau of Investigation released new data showing that Nashville ranks number 15 in the country for violent crime. The city came in with a violent crime rate of 1125 per 100,000 people – well above the national average of 706.
