Nashville Citizens Hold Impassioned “Dogs’ Breakfast” Rally Against City’s Amendment 1 Petition Ban Plot

Press Release –

When the British characterize something as a “dog’s breakfast”, it means they think it’s a  complete mess.

That’s exactly what a group of local residents gathered to say about the Metro Nashville election Amendment  1 – To illustrate the mess it would make of democracy, citizens hosted a tasty breakfast for local dogs who turned up en masse to eat chow on top of a giant printout of the proposal in South Nashville.

Amendment 1 grows government bureaucracy with the addition of yet another commission and other hoops  to jump through, like anticipating how much a petition would cost the city. Most egregiously, Amendment 1  would also amend the city charter so that the minimum number of signatures required would now be 10% of  Nashville’s total number of registered voters, that is currently over 480,000– rather than 10% of the number of people that voted at the last general election, as it stands currently. That means citizens would have to collect 500% more signatures – over 48,000 in a short amount of time– a near impossible task.

Karen Moore, organizer and a Republican State Executive Committee (SEC) candidate for District 20 on the  August 4 ballot stated, “We encourage all citizens of Nashville – Republican or Democrat – to vote against  Amendment One. It’s effectively banning residents’ ability to successfully petition the government to vote on  something they care about. Please spread the word with your friends and neighbors to vote NO on  Amendment 1!”

“This is an attempt by the City Council and Mayor’s Office to prevent the 2020 petition against the 37% city  property tax hike from ever happening again. If I am elected to the Republican SEC, I will continue to raise  awareness of important issues and to help good candidates run in elections across Davidson County – I will  fight for what’s right. Please vote NO to Amendment 1 and consider voting Karen More in early voting or on  August 4.”

State House District #59 Republican Primary candidate, Michelle Foreman added, “Voters have a right and a responsibility to hold their elected officials accountable for decisions that are detrimental to constituents, and  for Metro Councilmembers to eliminate the voice of the voter is the epitome of being self-serving at the public’s expense, and not being a public servant in the least.”
