A middle Tennessee man has been sentenced in an AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) case.
Thirty-year-old Portland resident Patrick D. Swanson now faces three decades behind bars, with Judge Dee David Gay of the Sumner County Criminal Court handing the sentence down.
Investigators found that Swanson had used artificial intelligence to place the faces of children onto images and also videos of naked people and people engaged in sex acts. Even more egregious is the fact that Swanson then traded his AI-generated CSAM for actual CSAM from an individual residing in Canada.
United States law enforcement was made aware of Swanson’s actions after authorities in Canada alerted them following the arrest of the Canadian with whom Swanson had been in communication.
The Department of Homeland Security, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, and Portland Police all had a hand in bringing Swanson to justice.
The thirty-year sentence will be served without the possibility of parole, early release, or probation according to Tennessee law, according tot he district attorney’s office.
CSAM cases in which the material is generated by AI are on the rise according to the FBI who recently warned parents to be aware of the growing threat.
According to federal investigators, images of children can be manipulated using AI-powered apps to create fake, sexually explicit content in just seconds and then used to harass, exploit and extort victims.
Special Agent in charge of the FBI’s Nashville Field Office Terence Reilly says that the targeting of children online has become increasingly prevalent and that children continue to be groomed through devices that connect to the internet.
In a recent podcast, Special Agent Kathleen Callaway with the FBI’s Washington Field Office explained that while grooming isn’t a federal offense, the FBI investigates it because it is a common precursor to the types of illegal acts which fall within their purview.
