A bill that would ban schools from having any dealings with those who provide or fund abortion services continues to advance in the Tennessee Senate.

Senate Bill 2158, sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28), as introduced, prohibits a Local Education Association (LEA) or public charter school from knowingly entering into an agreement with an individual or entity that performs abortions, induces abortions, provides abortion referrals, or provides funding, advocacy, or other support for abortions.

Violation of this legislation would be considered a violation of the Teacher Code of Ethics. This could result in professional discipline being brought against the violator.

After being deferred twice in the Senate Education Committee, they finally considered the bill on March 30th. It was recommended for passage and has been referred to the Senate Calendar Committee for scheduling to be heard on the Senate floor. No date has been set for that at this time.

The companion House Bill 2557, sponsored by Representative Debra Moody (R-Covington-District 81), was passed on March 7th.
