Sullivan County commissioners voted down a proposed property tax increase last week, opting instead to keep the current tax rate.

Commissioners considered a proposal that would have raised the current rate by 5-cents on each $100 of assessed value.

During the meeting, Commissioner Mark Ireson proposed instead that the amount of the tax rate that would be allocated to the general fund be decreased by 5 cents, allowing them to leave the current rate as is, at $1.61 per $100 of assessed value.

He noted that the county would be able to cover budgeted expenses without that additional revenue.

With two commissioners absent, the amended proposal passed unanimously.
