Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett announced last Thursday that a “suspicious package” addressed to the State Division of Elections Office was intercepted by the U.S. Postal Service and that federal authorities are investigating.

In a social media post, Hargett confirmed that the package was sent but “never reached its intended destination” and that the office appreciates “the FBI and USPS for taking election threats seriously.”

Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins said, “Fortunately, we have good processes in place and were able to stop it before it was even opened here in Tennessee.”

Goins also stated that this incident is not the first time his office has received suspicious mail, recalling a package sent to the office in 2024. That package was opened by Goins, and he said he found a white powder inside which ultimately tested negative for any hazardous materials.

Multiple other state election offices have reported suspicious packages being sent in the last week, including Ohio, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.

U.S. Postal Service investigators blocked delivery of a letter containing a “powdery white substance” to the Ohio office, while the elections offices in Oklahoma and Louisiana were evacuated after receiving an envelope and package also containing “suspicious white powder.” Fortunately, it appears that in all three scenarios the substances were determined not to be harmful.

The FBI and U.S. Postal Service Inspection Service are investigating last week’s incident in Tennessee, and those across the nation, but officials assured there would likely be no effect on early voting across the state.
