Trump was not the first disruptive, combative, nationalistic, populist President, and he won’t be the last. Jackson is most closely associated with the tradition of populism—appealing to and representing the interests of ordinary Americans. In this regard, he was the precursor to the tumultuous 45th President, with whom he otherwise has little in common.
