The Tennessee Conservative [By Paula Gomes] –

A bill that could put illegal aliens behind bars for life for committing violent crimes in Tennessee is on its way to the Senate floor for a final vote in that chamber.

The proposed legislation was recommended for passage after a 9 to 2 vote in the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee on Tuesday.

The Tennessee General Assembly website has the votes recorded as follows:

Senators voting aye were Republicans Haile, Hensley, Johnson, Powers, Stevens, Walley, Watson, White and Yager — 9.

Senators voting no were Democrats Lamar and Yarbro — 2.

Senate Bill 2770 (SB2770) sponsored by Senator Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma-District 16) addresses criminal offenses committed in Tennessee by those who have illegal immigration status. The proposed legislation “authorizes the enhancement of criminal penalties up to life in prison without parole upon conviction of violent crimes by illegal aliens; conviction of possession of a firearm or deadly weapon by an illegal alien; or conviction of a violent crime on the property of a school by any person.”

While the bill would result in increases in expenditures for incarceration within the state, the hope is that it would act as a deterrent to those coming across the United States border with the intent to land in Tennessee to engage in drug or human trafficking.

According to the Fiscal Note for the bill, the increase would not begin until after Fiscal Year 30-31. In addition, arrests and subsequent convictions to which certain enhancement factors apply that the legislation requires to be tracked by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s (TBI) Human Trafficking Advisory Council will be reported utilizing existing resources.

Corresponding House Bill 1872 (HB1872) sponsored by Representative Monty Fritts (R-Kingston-District 32) was placed “behind the budget” during a meeting of the House Finance, Ways and Means Subcommittee on March 27th, and was scheduled to be heard again in that committee on Tuesday.

However, the capitol website has not been updated with information regarding that meeting upon publication of this article.

Senate Bill 2770 has been scheduled to be heard on the Senate floor on April 18th. To tell your Tennessee State Senator how you would like them to vote on this bill, use the Find your Legislator tool HERE to find their contact information.

I agree with House Bill 1872 and the senate version. We need to stop the illegal entree into this country and when they commit a violent crime, the punishment should be severe. In some cases, they have been deported repeated times and continue to come back across the border.
