The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced that at the conclusion of a multi-agency operation running July 29-August 3, 30 missing juveniles from Shelby County have been safely recovered, with some being found across state lines.
Led by the TBI Criminal Intelligence Unit’s Missing Persons Clearinghouse in partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service, Memphis Safe Task Force, Memphis Police Department, and Department of Children’s Services (DCS), the teams recovered 30 juveniles, ages 10-17, who had been listed as missing, delinquent, or runaways.
Before the operation began, intelligence analysts identified numerous children reported as missing or who were unaccounted for in the Memphis area. Through the course of the week, teams checked 109 addresses to recover the 30 children, with two ultimately found in Georgia and one in Mississippi.
U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller commended the operation’s success, saying it highlights how effective multi-agency efforts can be.
“This operation underscores the critical importance of swift action in protecting our most vulnerable,” Miller emphasized. “Every child deserves to know that someone cared enough to find them.”
And TBI Director David Rauch said the number of children who go missing in Tennessee each month may surprise people.
“Hundreds of children go missing in our state every month,” he said. “From runaways that may leave their home out of desperation or despair, to those entangled in a custody battle, every single one of them deserves a fighting chance, and that’s why they also deserve our best work to help them.”
TBI also reiterated the importance of their Missing Persons Clearinghouse, which “serves as the statewide repository and coordination center for alerts, information, and coordination related to missing persons.”
It works closely with state and local law enforcement agencies, DCS, and federal partners across the state and nation “to strengthen efforts to locate and recover missing individuals.”
The Clearinghouse has one designated Special Agent and five Criminal Intelligence Analysts who “provide daily support to law enforcement, state partners, and non-profit organizations across the country.”
