A Knox County man with 30 previous felony convictions was sentenced to 15 years in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of aggravated assault back in May 2024.

50-year-old Larry Lynn Ray was most recently arrested following an assault that occurred on September 24, 2023, in South Knoxville.

According to prosecutors during the trial, the victim told police that he and another individual were in their car outside of a residence on Tipton Station Road. Ray opened the door on the driver’s side and placed a gun at the back of the victim’s head. District Attorney Charme Allen’s office stated that Ray “pistol whipped” the victim before the victim could drive off and call 911.

After his arrest, Ray called members of his family, asking them to contact the victim to try and convince him not to testify.

Ray was convicted of aggravated assault, which is a Class C Felony.

Following the trial, Judge Steve Sword sentenced Ray to serve 15 years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections with the chance for parole.

The DA’s office reported that Ray was a career criminal who has 30 prior felony convictions that took place in Knox, Union, and Sevier Counties. Those convictions include aggravated burglary, especially aggravated robbery, weapons charges, theft, and drug trafficking.
