The “Tennessee Civics Education Act” continues to advance in the House.
Sponsored by Kip Capley (R-Summertown-District 71), House Bill 1658 (HB1658) passed in a 11 to 2 vote along party lines in the House Education Committee on Tuesday.

As the bill has a fiscal note, it has been referred to the House Finance, Ways, and Means Committee.
According to the fiscal note, the legislation would cost $105,600 in Fiscal Year 26-27 and $60,000 Fiscal Year 28-29 and every four years thereafter.

The legislation would require that all first-time applicants for a teaching license in Tennessee pass the same test that immigrants seeking naturalization must pass.
New applicants would be required to pass the test with a score of 70 percent at a minimum. High school students are also required to pass a similar test as a condition of high school graduation.
