Press Release –

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In response to rising property taxes and the increasing financial strain placed on Tennessee’s senior citizens, Rutherford County Property Assessor Rob Mitchell is championing the Golden Homeowners Tax Relief Program, a statewide initiative that would offer full property tax reimbursement to qualified senior homeowners.

Currently, Tennessee’s property tax relief program only assists seniors aged 65+ who earn less than $33,460 annually, and even then, the maximum benefit is roughly $145 per year. With inflation and skyrocketing property values, that support has become woefully inadequate for many older Tennesseans trying to remain in their homes.

Mitchell’s proposal would eliminate the income threshold and instead provide full tax relief to seniors who meet age and long-term residency requirements, regardless of income. The plan is designed to be fiscally responsible, utilizing only 3% of the state’s annual budget surplus, with no new taxes or borrowing required.

“This is not an entitlement—it’s a repayment of a civic debt,” said Rob Mitchell. “We must ensure that no Tennessean who worked a lifetime building our state is forced from their home by a system that has outlived its fairness.”

Program Benefits at a Glance:

  • Full Property Tax Relief for homeowners aged 65+ who have lived in their homes for a specified number of years.
  • No Income Limitations, restoring fairness for seniors who saved modest pensions or Social Security benefits.
  • Supports Local Economies by allowing seniors to spend more on groceries, healthcare, and essential services.
  • Funded by Surplus: requires no new taxes and no new government debt.

Support and Action Needed

Mitchell is urging citizens and public officials across the state to support the plan and help bring it before the General Assembly.

How You Can Help:

“Tennessee has the resources,we simply need the will,” Mitchell added. “If we don’t protect those who built our communities, who will?”
