Tennessee Conservative News Staff –
On Tuesday, March 10th, two committees in the Tennessee General Assembly approved two separate bills – one that aims to increase application requirements for those who seek to gain a driver’s license who cannot speak and read English sufficiently and another that requires a memorandum of understanding between law enforcement and federal officials concerning enforcement of federal immigration laws.

The Tennessee House Departments and Agencies Subcommittee passed House Bill 2018 (HB2018) with 6 Republicans voting in favor, 0 No votes and 1 Democrat present but not voting.

As introduced, HB2018 “requires a memorandum of understanding entered between a law enforcement agency and federal officials concerning enforcement of federal immigration laws to include a requirement that the law enforcement agency accept and honor any immigration detainer received from federal immigration authorities, including maintaining custody of the subject of an immigration detainer for 48 hours beyond the time when the subject would have otherwise been released to allow federal immigration authorities to take custody of the subject and notifying federal immigration authorities as soon as possible prior to releasing the subject.”
HB2018 will now move forward to the House State & Local Government Committee at a hearing date yet to be determined.

The Senate version (SB1486) passed the Senate Judiciary Committee 7-2 along party lines on March 9th and has been referred to the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee.

The Tennessee House Transportation Committee approved House Bill 1708 (HB1708) with 16 Republicans voting in favor and 3 NO votes coming from Democrats.

As introduced, HB1708 “requires an applicant for a driver license who cannot speak and read English sufficiently to be issued a restricted license for one year and to re-take the written driver license examination in English to be issued a driver license thereafter; requires evidence of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or temporary lawful resident status prior to registering vehicles.”
HB1708 will now move forward to the House Finance, Ways & Means Subcommittee at a hearing date yet to be determined.

The Senate version (SB1889) is slated to be heard in the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee on Wednesday, March 11th.
