An immigration detainer has been filed for a Somalian man who was arrested and charged last week with the rape and subsequent death of a Nashville woman.
Officials with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office (DSCO) confirmed to the Tennessee Star that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has filed for the detainer against 39-year-old Mohamed Mohamed. According to police, Mohamed was born in Somalia.
Although a judge did set a bond of $300,000 for Mohamed, DSCO says he will not be released at this time.
“He has an active immigration detainer and will not be eligible for bond release while the detainer is still active,” said a DCSO spokesperson.
According to a statement from the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Mohamed was arrested on Thursday, August 14, after a passing Nashville Fire Department crew observed him sexually assaulting a woman in front of a church on Nolensville Pike. The crew stopped and detained Mohamed, calling for police.
The crew also provided medical assistance to the woman before she was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died.
Area surveillance cameras show that the woman was walking unsteadily before sitting on the steps of the church. Mohamed sat beside her and made physical contact with her, despite her attempts to push him away as she went in and out of consciousness. After she passed out, he laid her on the ground and sexually assaulted her repeatedly.
Reports indicate that the woman appeared to be under the influence of some substance, but autopsy reports are pending at this time. The 34-year-old woman, who police believe was homeless, has been identified; no additional details have been released as police are seeking her next-of-kin.
Mohamed refused to talk to police when he was questioned. He was booked into the Male Correctional Development Center where he will remain until he is released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. An ICE detainer likely means he is in this country illegally.
