Tennessee Senate Committee To Consider Mandatory Handgun Safety Course For Public School Students

The Tennessee Senate Education Committee will hear a proposed law on Wednesday that would require an annual handgun safety course for all public school and public charter school students.
Senate Bill 2923 (SB2923), sponsored by Senator Paul Bailey (R-Sparta-District 15), would make it mandatory for students to learn about firearm storage, school safety, and avoiding injury if a firearm is found, along with other safety topics.
Curriculum for the training would be coordinated with the help of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission.
The Tennessee House of Representatives recently passed the House version of the legislation (HB2882), sponsored by Representative Chris Todd (R-Madison County – District 73) with a vote of 79 ayes and 12 nays. One Republican, Representative Patsy Hazlewood (R-Signal Mountain-District 27) voted against the legislation.
