The Senate Education Committee passed a bill that will allow private schools serving Pre-K through 12th grade students to establish handgun carry policies for their property.

Senate Bill 1708 (SB1708), sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28), made a motion to pass the bill which aims to expand existing gun legislation established in private schools.

With no questions for Hensley, Chairman Jon Lundberg called for a vote. Senator Raumesh Akbari passed on the vote, while all other senators voted in favor of the bill. It will move forward to the calendar to be heard by the full Senate.

If passed into law, the current state law allowing K-12 private schools to make handgun carry policies would be changed to allow PreK-12 private schools to do the same.

The corresponding House Bill 1631 (HB1631), sponsored by Representative Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood-District 61), has been previously passed on the House floor by a vote of 74 to 23.
