The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
Legislation that would require increased reporting of law enforcement run-ins with illegal immigrants passed in the Tennessee Senate this week and is set to be heard on the House floor next week.
House Bill 0833 / Senate Bill 0750, sponsored by State Representative Kelly Keisling (R-Byrdstown-District 38) and Senator Ken Yager (R-Kingston-District 12) respectively , “requires each law enforcement agency, except for the Tennessee bureau of investigation, to report monthly to the department of safety each interaction that the law enforcement agency had with illegal aliens over the previous month.”
It also “requires that such report include the date of the interaction, the number of illegal aliens encountered, and a description of identification documents, if any, in their possession.”
The Department of Safety would also be required to provide a report including “an assessment of the population of illegal aliens residing in this state and any associated criminal enterprises” to the General Assembly by December 1st of each year or at the request of either the House or Senate speaker.
Senate Bill 0750 passed on the Senate floor Wednesday with 26 ayes and 5 noes; with the only NO votes coming from Democrats.
The bill also made its way through the final step before heading to the full House by passing through the House State and Local Government Committee with 18 ayes and 5 noes again with the only NO votes coming from Democrats.
The bill has been placed on the House Regular Calendar for April 14.
