The Perry County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to Tennessee residents to avoid picking up folded money they may find lying on the ground.
According to Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems, there have been two reported incidents of folded money being discovered on local gas station floors that, upon being picked up, were found to have a white powdery substance on them.
The substance on the cash was tested and was positive for both methamphetamine and fentanyl.
“This is very dangerous, folks! Please share and educate your children not to pick up the money,” Weems said.

Weems is hopeful that they are able to locate the individual(s) responsible for leaving the laced money in a location where anyone, including a child, could come into contact with it. He says he would like to see stricter penalties for people who hide drugs inside of money.
“It enrages me as a father and the sheriff that someone can act so carelessly and have no regard for others’ well-being, especially a child,” Weems continued.
Along with the warning, the Perry County Sheriff’s Department also posted a picture of a penny alongside a minute amount of white powder to show just how little fentanyl it takes to be lethal to an individual.
According to the CDC, fentanyl can enter the body through inhalation, oral ingestion, or contact with skin.
They are urging families to take the time to talk with children about the importance of avoiding contact with any folded money they may find on the ground. These bills could be placed in any public location.
