Three Pro-Life Bills In TN House Up For Debate This Week (Update 3/4/22)

House Subcommittees and the Tennessee House of Representatives will hear three pro-life bills this week, beginning Monday, March 7th.

If you support the passage of any or all of these bills, contact the associated subcommittee members and your legislators prior to their meetings.

#1 Tennessee Abortion-Inducing Drug Risk Protocol Act – a.k.a. the Tele-Med Abortion Ban

House Bill 2416 (HB2416) sponsored by Representative Robin Smith (R-Hixson-District 26) and Senate Bill 2281 (SB2281), sponsored by Senator Mike Bell (R-Riceville-District 9) comes in response to the FDA recently announcing they are openly encouraging tele-med and mail-order abortion prescriptions.

The legislation, if passed, will make it a criminal offense in Tennessee to prescribe the abortion pill (RU-486) without being in the physical presence of the patient.

HB2416 was scheduled to be heard by the House Health Subcommittee on February 22nd and March 1st but action was deferred in both cases.  It has now been rescheduled to be reviewed on Tuesday, March 8th.

#2 Expanding Child Abuse Laws To Protect Unborn Children

House Bill 2314 (HB2314) sponsored by Representative Bruce Griffey (R-Paris-District 75) and Senate Bill 2300 (SB2300), sponsored by Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17) in summary, expands the offenses of child abuse, child neglect, child endangerment, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect, and aggravated child endangerment to include acts of abuse, neglect, and endangerment against an unborn child.

The legislation also defines an unborn child as an individual living member of the species, homo sapiens, throughout the entire embryonic and fetal stages of the unborn child from fertilization to birth.

#3 Abortion Influence Education Bill

House Bill 2557 (HB2557), sponsored by Representative Debra Moody (R-Covington-District 81), and Senate Bill 2158 (SB2158) sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28) , as introduced, prohibits a Local Education Agency (LEA) or public charter school from knowingly entering into an agreement with an individual or entity that performs abortions, induces abortions, provides abortion referrals, or provides funding, advocacy, or other support for abortions.

An example of an agreement that would be prohibited under the legislation would be a school entering into a contract with such an entity to provide sex-ed.

HB2557 has been recommended for passage by the House K-12 Subcommittee and the House Education Administration Committee and now is on the regular House Calendar to receive votes on Monday, March 7th 2022.
