A new study by SmartAsset which ranked 83 of the least safe cities in the United States placed Nashville at 76th on the list and Memphis dead last as the most unsafe.
The study took into account not just crime rates but also fatal crashes, excessive drinking, and deaths caused by overdose.
SmartAsset looked at 90 percent of big cities within the U.S. cities, those with populations of 250,000 or more, to rank which were safest, taking into account violent crime, property crime, rates of traffic fatalities, as well as risk of disaster.
Violent crimes and property crime rates were substantially higher in Memphis than in Nashville with Bluff City also seeing high motor vehicle fatalities and being given a higher than average FEMA disaster risk rating.
Nashville’s violent crime rate was 0.0114 per capita and its property crime rate came in at 0.0459 per capita. By comparison, Memphis had a 0.0616 per capita rate for violent crime and 0.1286 per capita for property crimes.
To complete their analysis, SmartAsset pulled from FBI crime statistics, FEMA’s National Risk Index, traffic-fatality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
With the launch of the Memphis Safe Task Force (MSTF), more than 10,000 arrests have been made as part of ongoing operations.
A new analysis of federal deportation data revealed that nearly 900 ICE arrests were recorded in Shelby County since the MSTF launch and of those arrested, roughly 60 percent led to deportation.
Compiled through records from the Deportation Data project, a database maintained by UC Berkeley School of Law and UCLA drawing on Freedom of Information Act records, the analysis covers the first official day of MSTF operations on September 29th, 2025, through April 1st, 2026.
In that time, 891 ICE arrests were recorded in Shelby County, with 536 individuals being deported. About 42 percent of those arrested had two pending criminal charges.
A new state law that took effect July 1st establishes the Tennessee Safe Initiative task force for which the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is actively hiring 32 agents.
The task force will identify areas with prevalent criminal activity endangering public safety and which requires additional law enforcement operations and will not need a request from the local District Attorney to do so.
Made up of eight voting members, the new task force which includes the TBI director, commissioner of safety, and representatives from district attorneys general, sheriffs, and chiefs of police, will decide when and where the state launches extra law enforcement operations.
Perhaps based on the SmartAsset study, they will choose to send the new task force to Nashville.
