Small Businesses Ask For Consumer Patience As Supply Chain Issues Continue

Supply chain issues are continuing to cause problems for small businesses across Tennessee, forcing many of them to pass along price increases to customers.
The price of nearly all building materials has increased due to shortages, and businesses are seeing that even more with the current nationwide plastics shortage. This is increasing the cost of containers, making product prices increase overall.
Shawn Groton, owner of Nashville Disc Golf Store, says they have also seen increases in the cost of shipping.
“I think the shipping with the containers is definitely having an impact on prices,” said Groton. “It has to be because shipping has gone way up.”
Groton also notes that demand for items that are in short supply has also affected his business.
“One of the main manufacturers say they have 100 different molds, or different types of discs, on the order form there might be 25-50% of those molds available,” Groton said.
Some retailers anticipated supply issues and planned ahead for the holiday shopping season by ordering inventory months in advance.
Greg Davidson, co-owner of Music City Outdoors, says his company learned a few things when the pandemic caught businesses off guard.
“We’ve gotten better at anticipating what demand’s going to be and ordering. A lot of what I have in stock now, I ordered six months ago in anticipation of needing it,” Davidson said.

Many store owners are asking shoppers to exercise some patience and be a little flexible this season, as inconsistent delivery times and increased demand for items continue to be an issue.
Davidson said, “It’s frustrating for me as a business owner. If you walk in the front door, I want to have what you want. And there’s just no way to do that right now. But I will have something similar, or I will have some options.”
Governor Lee has joined with 15 other governors across the country asking for CDL licensure requirements to be loosened in an effort to boost the number of commercial drivers. They believe this will help to increase supply to businesses and help to minimize some of the cost increases.
