The Tennessee Conservative [By Jason Vaughn] –
Campus Reform, a project of Leadership Institute, has released its profile on Tennessee State University which evaluates the school based on liberal bias, speech codes and other relevant policies and factors.
Tennessee State University (TSU) is a public university in Nashville. Around 5,041 undergraduate students are enrolled at the university.
Campus Reform found that the university has Zero Conservative student political organizations and One liberal organization, the Gay Straight Alliance.
OpenSecrets data reveals the TSU employee political donations for the 2020 election cycle came in at 90% going to Democratic candidates while only 10% went to Republican candidates.
Campus Reform has given TSU a red light for speech code. According to FIRE, this is due to “at least one university policy clearly and substantially restricting freedom of speech.” FIRE also notes that a red light policy at a public institution is unconstitutional.
In 2020, TSU hired MSNBC host and progressive activist Rev. Al Sharpton as a Distinguished Guest Lecturer. Among his duties will be teaching “political science grounded in social justice.”
On August 8th of this year, TSU’s leaders met with Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to discuss abortion access on campuses nationwide following the overturn of Roe v Wade.
Harris commended the university leaders of TSU, and others in attendance from various other states, for taking steps to ensure abortion access at their respective schools, such as by providing “emergency funds” for “care,” and “flexible attendance and leave policies” for students to get abortions.
On the flipside of the coin, TSU is not implementing a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students and employees and they do require SAT/ACT scores for undergraduate admission.

Founded in 1979 by its president, Morton C. Blackwell, Leadership Institute provides training in campaigns, fundraising, grassroots organizing, youth politics, and communications. The Institute teaches conservatives of all ages how to succeed in politics, government, and the media.
The Institute offers more than 50 types of training schools, workshops, and seminars; a free employment placement service; and a national field program that trains conservative students to organize campus groups.
Since 1979, LI has trained more than 250,000 conservative activists, leaders, and students. The Institute’s unique college campus network has grown to more than 1,700 conservative campus groups and newspapers.
While many liberal organizations exist to increase the involvement of liberal activists, few similar organizations exist to serve conservatives. Because conservatism tends to focus on the power of ideas, most conservative organizations are think tanks that focus on policy or legislation.
The left excels at organizing and mobilizing large numbers of people – activating them in the public policy process. While philosophy is very important, the lack of widespread, active conservative participation is one of America’s greatest practical weaknesses.
LI increases the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. The Institute doesn’t analyze policy; it teaches conservative Americans how to influence policy through direct participation, activism, and leadership.
