A new study conducted by VPNpro.com, cybersecurity experts, ranks the social media apps that Americans most want to get rid of.
The tech group analyzed Google search data to determine which apps were most commonly searched in conjunction with certain terms, such as “delete Facebook” or “how to deactivate Facebook.” From this, they calculated the most disliked social media apps both nationwide and in individual states.
In Tennessee, Facebook came in as the app that more residents want to delete. Tennesseans search terms related to deleting or deactivating the app approximately 24,000 times per month.
Instagram falls just slightly below that with a combined average monthly search rate of around 20,000 per month. Snapchat, Twitter/X, and TikTok round out the top 5 with 6,824 searches per month, 3,084 searches per month, and 694 searches per month respectively.
Nationally, the order of disliked apps is close to the same, with only a reversal of the top 2. Instagram comes in first place across the county with an average of 1,181,302 combined searches each month.
Facebook is second nationwide with nearly 1,005,860 searches regarding deleting or deactivating on average each month.
A VPNPro spokesperson said, “Between the recent launch of Twitter’s new competitor Threads, Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, and the era of TikTok in full force, social media usage has taken some unexpected turns in the last year alone. While it might be hard for some of us to imagine a world without social media, many Americans are opting to delete specific platforms, as highlighted in this research.”
“It’s fascinating that the most popular Meta-based platforms, Instagram and Facebook, rank as the top two apps that Americans want to delete, which could be great news for Twitter-owner Elon Musk. However, with Mark Zuckerburg’s recent launch of Threads and Musk’s recent announcement of Twitter’s rebrand to ‘X’, it will be interesting to see how this ranking changes in the near future.
