After facing opposition in the form of professed true conservative Lulu Elam, Scott Golden has been re-elected to serve his fifth term as Chair of Tennessee’s GOP.

Every two years, on the first Saturday in December, the state GOP’s executive committee votes on party leadership.

The committee is made up of two members per state senatorial district, one woman and one man. There are 66 total seats on the committee.

So on December 7th of this year, the committee cast their votes. Elam received 10 votes and Golden received 49.

There were only 59 votes cast this year due to some member vacancies.

Elam currently sits on the Tennessee Republican Party’s executive committee, representing District 20.

Now that Golden has been re-elected, it looks like he will be the first person in over eighty years to serve a fifth term in the position.

“It’s just amazing how intertwined I’ve been with this organization throughout my life,” Golden told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. “It’s really been my life calling, and it’s a great honor to serve as chairman.”

As state GOP chair Golden is responsible for managing state executive committee affairs, coordinating political activities, presiding over meetings, creating the party budget, and carrying out additional responsibilities outlined in the Tennessee GOP’s bylaws, which Golden’s GOP has been notorious for applying or ignoring as they so choose.

Hence the repeated call for a more conservative state GOP.

However, under Golden’s leadership the party has lobbied for closing the state primaries.

“I was glad Scott got in again. I’ve been very happy with him,” said Executive Committee Member for District 11, David Queen. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s very informed about the bylaws and how things work.”

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Golden was paid a salary of $110,000 when he was first elected party chair back in 2016.

Taking incremental raises throughout his eight years as chair into consideration, he will receive a salary of $139,000 in his fifth term.

The Tennessee Democrat Party race for chair is ongoing and their election will not be held until January.

Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville-District 90), Rep. Vincent Dixie (D-Nashville-District 54), and Hamilton County Democrat Party Chair Rachel Campbell are all in the running to fill the seat of current Democrat Party Chair Hendrell Remus.

The state Democrat Party chair receives a $90,000 salary.
