A Hamilton County jury has convicted an illegal immigrant for the 2022 murder of his girlfriend.
24-year-old Jose Angel Rios Ramirez initially told police that he had gone to sleep next to his girlfriend, 34-year-old Oliva Jarquin Pena, after a night of drinking. He said he woke the next morning to find her unresponsive.
When Hamilton County EMS arrived on the scene, Pena was pronounced dead.
After additional questioning, Rios Ramirez told police that the couple had been arguing the night before. He stated that he strangled Pena from behind until she stopped talking and then went to sleep beside her.
District Attorney Coty Wamp released the following statement after the verdict:
“Oliva was a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. Assistant District Attorneys Aaron Chaplin and Andrew Basler fought for Oliva as a victim of domestic violence who unfortunately was not able to fight for herself. They represented the State of Tennessee well and I am so very proud of their commitment to this case. Because of their work, Oliva did not fall through the cracks.
The defendant shouldn’t have even been in our country— much less committing violent crimes against women.”
