The Tennessee Conservative [By Olivia Lupia] –

Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton announced on Tuesday that all elected Democrats are being stripped of their committee positions in response to their unprofessional and rule-breaking conduct on the final day of the special session to redistrict the state’s congressional map.

The last day of the Second Extraordinary Session of the 144th General Assembly devolved into total chaos and pandemonium as Republicans passed the redistricting package, with Democrats staging massive protests, entering into altercations with law enforcement, standing on desks, and even reportedly blocking some members from being able to cast their votes.

Sexton’s letter to Democrat Minority Leader Rep. Karen Camper said the actions taken by the members of the Democratic Caucus were “aimed at disrupting the democratic and legislative process and creating disorder on the House Floor” and noted several specific instances of these disturbances and rule breaking.

Those actions include:

  • Interlocking arms in the House well
  • Blocking aisles on the House floor
  • “Instigating and encouraging disruptions of the legislative process in coordination with paid protestors and attendees in the gallery, including a distribution of ear plugs to a member of your caucus”
  • Using prohibited props and noisemakers on the House floor
  • “Demonstrating a lack of respect toward fellow members seeking recognition to speak on legislation”
  • “Flagrant disregard” for the House’s Rules of Order

In his conclusion, Sexton informed Leader Camper that members of the Democratic Caucus will receive individual letters officially removing them from all standing committees and subcommittees, except for the few on the Calendar and Government Operations Committees explicitly required by the House Rules

The official reprimand and removals come after Sexton previously stated House leadership was reviewing footage and evidence from the demonstrations and the lawmakers involved in the disruptions would “face the consequences”.

“People who will look at these protestors and say that they were peaceful — there was nothing peaceful about them. There’s too much video. They were the most aggressive, vile, violent protestors that we’ve had. We had five members that were assaulted trying to leave the Capitol,” Sexton said.

Other Democrat members confirmed receipt of their individual letters which reiterated their removal from any committees not required by the House Rules and directing any further questions back to Leader Camper.

Rep. Justin Pearson took to social media in protest of this disciplinary action by Sexton and to claim his actions were tied to race. “Speaker of the TN House Cameron Sexton just removed me and every Democrat- and therefore every Black elected official in the state legislature from any committee we served on. This move strips nearly 2 million Tennesseans from the representation they deserve in TN state leg,” he posted.

These committee removals are the most significant disciplinary measure made by Republicans since the expulsion of Democrat Reps. Pearson and Jones from the House in 2023.

There has been no similar action taken as of this writing by Lt. Gov. Randy McNally in response to similar antics in the Senate, mainly by Sen. Charlane Oliver who climbed atop her desk and held a huge banner while yelling and chanting.

House Democrats will now be limited in their ability to participate in regular legislative work until the next session. And as most committee appointments are made by the Speaker, these removals could carry over into next year if Republicans pass a similar rules package that governed the last two years for the 115th General Assembly in 2027.

  1. The Republican caucus in the House showing some backbones while the caucus in the Senate thinks about it. . .as usual.

  2. They should be removed. Their behavior was juvenile, meant to disrupt, and completely unprofessional. There are consequences.
