Tennessee Conservative News Staff –

An East Memphis gynecologist convicted on charges of fraud and misuse of medical devices has filed an appeal to overturn his prison sentence.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar was found guilty of 16 counts of reusing medical devices intended for single use, six counts of healthcare fraud, and 18 additional related charges in January 2026.

Kumar was sentenced on July 8 to twenty years in federal prison and two years of supervised release. He originally faced the possibility of up to 162 years.

An appeal was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. The appeal would be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Kumar’s attorneys have until July 30 to file all documents and request transcripts. If they do not meet this deadline, the appeal could be dismissed due to lack of action.
