Tennessee Conservative News [By Paula Gomes] –
East Memphis gynecologist Sanjeev Kumar has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars after being found guilty on charges of medical fraud and misconduct and will be subject to another 24 months of supervised release after his time in prison.
Kumar’s legal team plans to appeal his conviction and the sentence.
As the 45-year-old operator of a women’s health clinic, Kumar performed procedures using equipment meant only for one-time use and without sufficiently sanitizing the items over 15,000 times during a nearly five-year span. He was found guilty of 18 counts of adulteration of medical devices, 6 counts of health care fraud, and 16 counts of misbranding medical devices.

Used in hysteroscopy procedures to diagnose endometrial cancer, which involved insertion through the cervix and into the uterus, Kumar purchased less than 200 new hysteroscopes between 2019 and 2024.
Kumar used the dirty equipment on thousands of women, charging more than $41 million for this one procedure alone, netting nearly $5 million from Medicare and Medicaid. Kumar also had patients with private health insurance on whom he performed hysteroscopy with biopsies.
After his sentencing, Special Agent in Charge with the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General Kelly Blackmon said, “By performing thousands of invasive procedures with adulterated devices and billing Medicare and Medicaid for unsafe care, Dr. Kumar put vulnerable women at significant risk while diverting critical taxpayer resources for his own gain.”
A hearing has been set for October 2nd, 2026, to determine restitution. Kumar must follow curfew and wear an ankle monitor while he remains out on bond.
Kumar’s Poplar Avenue Clinic Women’s Health and Med Spa was raided in 2024, almost a year prior to his arrest. He was ultimately indicted on 36 federal counts that included performing unnecessary procedures, reusing disposable materials, fraudulently billing Medicare and Medicaid, and enticing individuals across state lines for illicit sexual activity.
A year after the raid on Kumar’s clinic by the FBI, TBI, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General, Kumar was allowed to reopen providing he follow strict conditions issued by the court.
Kumar’s attorneys argued that the public’s need for his expertise in providing very specific surgeries outweighed “alleged and unsubstantiated” claims against him.
Patient visits were allowed to resume but a judge stipulated that Kumar was not allowed to examine minors unless authorized by the courts to do so. Among other requirements, multi-use devices had to be used during procedures and chaperoned office exams were mandated.
At the time of Kumar’s arrest, the FBI asked potential victims to complete a questionnaire on their website in order to connect them with agents. Over 200 individuals came forward with complaints.
While Kumar was originally found guilty on 40 out of 46 federal charges, a judge later dropped 17 counts which included 4 counts of enticement and inducement to travel to engage in illegal sex acts.
