Another family has come forward with abuse allegations against a West Tennessee daycare that left a six-year-old girl dead after leaving her on a hot bus for hours. The daycare “surrendered its license and permanently closed, effective August 14, 2026.”

Kid University in Cordova was found to be at fault by the Department of Human Services for the death of Winter Jones, a non-verbal autistic child who was not removed from the bus upon arriving at Macon Road Elementary.

According to DHS investigators, Kid University did not have a monitoring device on the vehicle, staff members were not properly trained for transporting children, and employees failed to complete the transportation log and did not perform a walk-through of the bus after arriving at the daycare.

One Mid-south mother says the daycare should have been put out of business years ago, stating that her four-year-old autistic son was hit by a daycare employee in January 2024. After questioning a bruise on her son’s face, the mother was told by staff members that the boy had fallen and hit his head.

The mother took her son to the emergency room where she was told that the bruise on his face was shaped like an adult’s handprint. According to the mother, the bruise stayed on his face for over a week.

After the mother filed a police report and hired a lawyer, the case was settled out of court. The mother told her story at the risk of being fined for violating a non-disclosure agreement but said she felt she needed to speak up.

“It’s well worth $500 to get that family justice because my son didn’t get the justice that he deserved,” she said. “They were not held accountable appropriately. And this could have all been prevented. This little girl could still be at home having dinner with her family tonight, getting ready for school the next day. And instead they’re getting ready for a funeral. This should not have happened. This could have been prevented.”

The daycare was cited back in 2019 by DHS for transportation violations during an unscheduled inspection. A corrective plan was required after an employee failed to do a walk-through of the bus.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time, but the Shelby County District Attorney’s office says preparation is being made to take the case before a grand jury.

Kid University is now permanently closed according to DHS, although the owner, Raven Marshall Lewis, owns a number of other daycares in the Memphis area.
