A Tennessee bill that seeks to prohibit unlawful restrictions being placed on churches and religious organizations during disasters or states of emergency was reviewed by Committee on Tuesday, February 8th.

House Bill 1694 (HB1694), sponsored by Representative Glen Casada (R-Franklin-District 63) aims to prohibit the state, a political subdivision, or a public official from prohibiting, or imposing additional restrictions on, the lawful operations of a church or religious organization, including religious services or activities, during a state of emergency, major disaster, or natural disaster. – Amends TCA Title 58.

The bill was placed on the calendar for the House State Government Committee for Tuesday, February 8th. On February 8th, the bill was recommended for passage and referred to the House Calendar & Rules Committee.

HB1694’s Senate companion bill SB1837 has been passed on first and second consideration and referred to the Senate State and Local Government Committee but has not appeared on their calendar yet for review.
