A bill which would require public schools to educate students on the dangers of child trafficking passed in a 4 to 1 vote in the House Education Instruction Subcommittee on Tuesday.

The one “No” vote came from Democrat Representative Gloria Johnson (Knoxville-District 90).

Sponsored by Representative Jake McCalmon (R-Franklin-District 63), House Bill 1527 (HB1527) now advances to the House Education Committee.

The legislation would require age and grade appropriate instruction on an annual basis to provide awareness of child trafficking and skill building for students to prevent them from becoming victims themselves.

All K-12 instruction would become part of health education rather than through a family life curriculum.
