Just two years after investing millions of dollars into an office building on Nashville’s Music Row, the social media giant is closing that same office and laying off all staff to “streamline its operations”, which may be in part due to the restructuring the company undertook as part of a deal brokered by the Trump Administration to avoid the app being banned in the U.S.
TikTok is owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, though the U.S. operations now have a separate ownership structure following a 2024 federal law requiring divestiture from ByteDance over national security and data concerns.
To avoid a national ban, the platform is now partially overseen by Oracle, which also recently relocated its world headquarters to Nashville from Texas.
Under the new entity, called TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, ByteDance retains a minority stake of just under 20% while non-Chinese investors hold the remaining approximately 80%. Oracle, U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake, and MGX, an AI-focused investment firm backed by entities linked to the Abu Dhabi government, each hold 15% while other investors comprise the rest of that majority stake.
While the U.S. joint venture meets regulatory requirements by handling U.S. user data, content moderation, and other operations under the majority-American board oversight with Oracle involved in security and infrastructure, it still licenses TikTok’s recommendation algorithm from ByteDance as the Chinese company retains ownership of the core technology.
Some of these changes could be contributing factors for the Nashville office’s closure, though the company only said the decision was made “to streamline our operations and better align our teams for long-term growth.”
“We remain fully committed to providing secure, safe and positive experiences for the 200 million Americans that create, discover and connect with what they love on TikTok,” the company statement read.
Some reports estimate 250 employees were affected by the layoffs, and this is not the first round of cutbacks the company has made. In November of 2024, TikTok shuttered its standalone music streaming service and has since reportedly cut staff from its music division more than once. Hundreds of jobs were also cut globally in 2024 as the platform shifted more of its content moderation to AI.
But recently the social media platform found itself in Tennessee headlines as a Knoxville man arrested by the FBI for making death threats to President Trump and other public officials over TikTok was indicted on 22 federal charges, raising more questions about how rigorously content is being moderated and if the regulatory oversight is performing as intended.
