After Laurie Cardoza-Moore, a Commissioner on the Tennessee Textbook & Instructional Materials Quality Commission, called for an investigation into the hiring of a former California educational advocate for Critical Race Theory-based “math equity” by the Tennessee Department of Education, Charlie Bufalino, assistant commissioner of policy and legislative affairs for TDOE defended her and said, “Maves never stated that math was racist and she never stated that she believed that students should not have access to advanced math coursework.”

In a news release, Cardoza-Moore said, “Rachael Maves comes to Tennessee with a controversial history of being a key proponent of California’s racist ‘Math Framework’ overhaul, a concept that holds students back regardless of talent or ability in favor of ‘equity,’ rather than individual excellence.”

“A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction is a toolkit provided to California educators that provides resources and curriculum that “centers Black, Latinx, and Multilingual students in grades 6-8, addresses barriers to math equity, and aligns instruction to grade-level priority standards,” according the program’s website.

Maves, the new Chief of Preparation and Performance at TDOE, was hired because she “strongly aligns” with Governor Bill Lee and Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn’s vision for educational excellence. She said in a statement, “In no way do I believe that math is racist, nor do I believe that advanced math coursework should be abolished. I believe all students should have access to high-quality math courses and be given ample opportunity to access math content at each student’s level of ability to ensure they are well prepared for college and career opportunities.”

A statement from Governor Lee regarding Maves new role in Tennessee would be reassuring but Cardoza-Moore and her team is reportedly no longer receiving communication from Governor Lee’s office.

Get rid of Maves NOW! Dumbing down is not equity. Raise the bar for success rather than lowering it for failure.

I am so glad this firefighter for 26 years and 44 years as a nurse and still nursing is getting 70 y/o. This CRT is about socialism 101! This country is changing and TN is not doing enough to stop this toxic change! My wife and I hate this for our grandkids!

Any person who even remotely believes in and CRT issues should never have a job teaching children. Any state legislator, much less any state Governor, who allows this garbage into our schools should be recalled and subsequently taken out of office.

I could not agree more. Socialism/Marxism is just around the corner. The next step is Communism. The only difference between the 2 is Communism uses tanks.

I recall Billy running as a plaid shirt pick up driving look alike to a previous governor and as a conservative. Duh! What happened? We need to find a real Conservative to run, replace the plumber and rejoin the red state majority. We don’t need Nashville blue Marxists in charge of anything after they screwed up the faux pandemic.
