After flipping control during the August 6 election, two Democrats have been elected as chair and vice chair of the Knox County Schools Board of Education after one member won over a Republican who then declined a second nomination.
Holding two seats, winning two seats, and managing to flip a reliably Republican seat in August, Democrats now hold a 5-4 majority on the Knox County school board. On Sept. 8, the new board selected a chair to preside over the nine-member body with Democrats holding the power to choose their leader.
Democrat Katherine Bike will serve as the new chair, beating out Republican Travis Wright in a partisan 5-4 vote. Anne Templeton, another Democrat, was nominated for vice chair but then also nominated Wright for the position in the “spirit of bipartisanship.”
“I think you’ve done a great job thus far and I think that this body can set an example of bipartisanship with leaders,” Templeton said to Wright.
Wright declined the nomination without comment, leaving Templeton the sole candidate. All four Republicans passed on voting, but the five Democrat votes secured her position as vice chair.
“We are all elected officials and represent a diverse set of students across 91 schools,” Templeton said. “Although I would have preferred to make our first step of this new body a bipartisan one, I will be honored to take on the leadership role as nominated and will serve with all students as our priority.”
These leadership roles are important as the board chair presides over meetings, has authority to call special meetings, sets the tone for discussions, determines speaking times and allotments for members, and serves as the primary point of contact with district leaders, including setting board agendas and priorities.
Republicans held both the chair and vice chair positions following the shift to partisan school board races in 2022, with the shakeup marking the first time in years a Democrat will lead the body.
