A former Memphis-area homeschool basketball coach has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for sexually abusing one of his players and later stalking her for years.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 44-year-old Andreus Shannon was sentenced to 144 months behind bars after being convicted of stalking and traveling across state lines to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
Federal prosecutors said Shannon abused his position of trust and authority to exploit the victim, who was under the age of 16 at the time the abuse began.
According to court documents, Shannon coached for a homeschool basketball association and regularly transported the girl to practices and scrimmages. Over the course of several years, the DOJ said he sexually abused the victim at multiple locations including his home in Memphis, a rental property in Tennessee, and various gyms in both Tennessee and Mississippi.
When the victim turned 18 and attempted to cut ties with Shannon, he allegedly began cyberstalking the girl. Prosecutors said he threatened to release sexually explicit images of the victim in an effort to coerce and intimidate her. Authorities confirmed the stalking continued for two years before Shannon was arrested.
Chief District Judge Debra M. Brown sentenced Shannon to 144 months for the illegal sexual activity with a minor, with an additional five years of supervised release. Additionally, she sentenced him to 60 months for cyberstalking, to run concurrent with the other sentence.
“The defendant’s crimes represented a truly reprehensible betrayal of trust, and he is now in prison where he belongs,” said U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner.
Shannon is ineligible for parole in federal prison, and he will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.
