In a well-organized and executed effort, the grassroots Activate Hamilton slate of candidates defeated establishment-assembled candidates over two-to-one in Saturday’s HCGOP convention.
Turnout was the largest on record according to then-presiding HCGOP Chair, Mark Harrison. Organizers for Activate Hamilton took their case directly to almost 18,000 Bonafide Republicans in Hamilton County.
Lines were long, but convention goers seemed upbeat and enthusiastic about the process. A large number of attendees were participating in the convention process for the very first time and felt empowered that their vote could make a difference.
When Gail Greene won the Chairmanship against former Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond, the floor erupted into cheers and applause. Greene’s acceptance speech followed the announcement and can be seen below:

“I couldn’t be more grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support by the people of Hamilton County. They were ready for change in the local GOP and they gave up an entire Saturday to make it happen. This is the people’s victory, not mine,” Greene told the Tennessee Conservative.

Chair
Gail Greene – 213 votes or 67.19%
Jim Hammond – 104 votes or 32.81%
