The Tennessee Conservative [By Olivia Lupia] –
The House Education Instruction Subcommittee is scheduled to hear a bill which would require public schools to educate students on the dangers of child trafficking Wednesday, Feb. 11.
HB1527, sponsored by Rep. Jake McCalmon (R-Franklin-District 63) would require schools to provide instruction in child trafficking awareness and prevention to students in grades K-12 through health education instead of through a family life curriculum.

The bill’s text notes that schools must ensure all instruction “is age-and-grade-appropriate and advances each year through developmentally appropriate instruction and skill building”.
It also necessitates school boards and governing bodies of charter schools submit a plan for the required instruction to the commissioner of education, make the plans publicly available on their websites, and send a report to the commissioner by July 1 verifying the instruction took place.
Should the legislation be passed, the new requirements would take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
The Senate companion bill, SB1710, is carried by Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson and is still awaiting a date before the Senate Education Committee.
