The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell avoided questions last week related to the presence of dangerous Venezuelan gang members in the city.
A Fox17 News reporter asked the mayor if he knew of members being in Nashville, in the wake of a warning from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation regarding the Tren de Aragua gang being in Tennessee and the recent arrest of a gang member in connection with human trafficking in Chattanooga.
Instead of answering the question, O’Connell stated, “What I will say is Chief Drake has advised us, I mean even before the TBI report, we knew they were active in Tennessee. MNPD has a very active and successful gang unit and they have continually monitored that activity.”
He added, “Right now I think if their investigations are underway we’re not gonna know about it but when arrests are made we all will know.”
Residents are looking for answers as to where gang activity may be taking place, but officials are vague as to where exactly members have been identified.
Earlier this month, TBI Director David Rausch announced the gang’s presence in Tennessee, saying that they were in “all of our major cities.”
Denial has been a common theme amongst local law enforcement and leadership as both have claimed that the gang’s presence was a non-issue.
However, similar statements have been made in both Chattanooga and Memphis, just shortly before gang members were arrested in those areas.
Metro Police did not provide any specifics when questioned by Fox17, simply stating that they had a heightened awareness of the gang’s activities.
